How can a car so little on the outside be so large on the inside? The huge five-seat interior with its clean inviting lines has been finished with different levels of trim (one for each model), all of them in warm and modern colours, materials and textures.

Turn the ignition and you’ll even see that the LCD readout is colour co-ordinated when it greets you with ‘Ciao’.The dual tone instrument panel perfectly contrasts with this interior, as does the multi-purpose glove box, removable rubbish compartment and enclosed upper dash storage bin (somewhere to keep your sunnies).And in true Mazda style, every interior detail is superbly designed and beautifully crafted.

From the sporty instrument panel to the centre console where the air-conditioning, heating and CD stereo controls are close at hand. On Maxx and Genki, the 4-speaker, six-disc, in-dash CD player is controlled from the steering wheel, a feature that gets a big thumbs up from music fans.

Power windows, power mirrors and central locking are all at your fingertips too.Little things like CDs, coffee cups, sunglasses and tissues get their own special storage compartments too, cleverly designed into the cabin, right where you need them.

Because its design has been tailored to meet the widest variety of people’s needs, the Mazda2 is also extremely practical.

The back hatch opens to reveal a low and wide rear floor and large rear opening, easier for loading and unloading. A centre front roof mounted aerial has been fitted to all models.

It wouldn’t be a Mazda unless we talked about Zoom-Zoom. That fun-to-drive factor we call ‘Emotion in Motion’ is instilled into every car we make, and the Mazda2 is no exception.

The Mazda2 sports a zippy 1.5 litre 4-cylinder engine. With Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) to efficiently distribute the engine’s power, it delivers one of the best power and torque outputs in its class: a swift 82 kW at 6,000 rpm and 141 Nm at 4,000rpm.

Not that you’ll hear any of it from the comfort of that luxurious cabin – the Mazda2 is also a class leader in lowest noise vibration and engine quietness.

You get the option of two different transmissions. Number one is the new, sporty Activematic. Leave it in auto mode, or change up or down through the gears without a clutch. The second option is a silky smooth, dynamic five-speed manual. So it’s not only fun to drive, but easy to drive as well.

Whichever transmission you choose, the Mazda2 delivers exceptionally responsive handling, along with well-balanced and stable performance in all driving conditions.
