Evolution of an icon.

‘Jinba Ittai’ – Rider and Horse as one

The addition of the Roadster Coupe into the MX-5 range provides a unique combination of attributes. The thrill of driving an open-top sports car comes with the added security of a hard top. The Roadster Coupe’s first ever powered retractable hard-top, which does not sacrifice any boot space, goes from closed to open in 12 seconds.

The addition of DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) as standard equipment on both the Soft-top and Roadster Coupe along with the MX-5’s renowned chassis balance and nimble handling, all come together to create the ultimate Zoom-Zoom experience.

While most sports cars aim for specific, unemotional performance targets – such as the time required to accelerate to 100km/h or the cornering-G provided by the chassis – Mazda engineers established wholly different goals to reinvigorate the lightweight sports car.

The all new MX-5 combines the feeling of balance and harmony to create the ultimate Zoom-Zoom.

The interior design themes are ’simple functionality’ and ‘comfortable openness’ with high-quality craftsmanship to delight sports car enthusiasts.

A T-shaped general layout joins the horizontal strength of the instrument panel to the substantial center backbone tunnel. Four round heating and cooling vents help establish a straight reference line across the front of the cockpit.

Piano-black finish provides a modern high-quality surface for several areas of the interior.

Switches, gauges and driving controls are precisely designed and carefully positioned for optimum function in keeping with Jinba Ittai goals to help make the vehichle and driver one. A tilt-adjustable steering wheel has been added for the first time to help drivers with extremely tall or short statures fit the cockpit perfectly.

Mazda MX-5 Exterior

The MX-5 exterior remains approachable and fun, but incorporates modern styling cues to deliver both the simple functionality of a modern lightweight sports car and the athletic solidity of a true sports car.

Roadster Coupe power retractable hard-top has smooth aerodynamic lines from bonnet to boot. This creates the appearance of a lower, more powerful vehicle.

Fender arches are notably more pronounced to accommodate the substantially wider wheel track dimensions and to provide a more athletic stance consistent with new Mazda design DNA. The wide shoulder area of the body tapers to a narrower sill to lend a light-on-its-feet look.

In profile, MX-5 continues the low, flowing shoulder line established by the original. Side surfaces just below the shoulder create prominent highlights between the wheels, to emulate taut skin stretched over toned muscle.

Performing for Zoom-Zoom

A spirited engine with a wieldy transmission constitutes the heart of any sports car.

A new MZR 2.0-litre engine powers the all-new MX-5. This light and compact design features chain-driven double overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, variable intake valve timing and electronically controlled port fuel injection. With this sporty new engine, output reaches 118kW at 6,700 rpm with peak torque around 188Nm at 5,000 rpm.

Sports car enthusiasts will also reap a special pleasure from a new six-speed manual transmission, changing gears by a quick flick of the wrist. The new MX-5’s combination of low effort and short travel will establish a benchmark for all sports cars to aspire to.

Dynamics

Two key words for the feeling they pursued were ‘brisk’ and ‘nimble’. The goal was for a natural, lively feeling that responds to speed or direction changes as swiftly as the driver alters their mind. Every aspect of the control operation has been coordinated, with steering, suspension, brakes, engine, and transmission responses that create a truly dynamic sports car. Newly developed rear suspension and an increase in overall chassis stiffness by 28%, are significant factors in the enhanced dynamic stability of the new MX-5.
